Southwest Christian Care and EnAble South - Serving Together! By Maria Lee, Director of Support Services (Vocational)
Southwest Christian Care is a ministry providing quality services and supports to the terminally ill, medically fragile children, and their families. They have welcomed volunteers from EnAble with open arms. This has provided a great opportunity to give back, and also learn along the way.
Regina and Cathy (winners of the WOW Award on pages 1-2 in this issue) volunteer with the children at the Hope House on a weekly basis. They usually go in the evening and spend time with the children and assist as needed. Regina also volunteers at the Born Again Bargains Thrift Store. The store is an important source of income for Southwest Christian Care. Henry, Ira, and Allen also volunteer at the store. They go each Friday for a couple of hours where they sort hangers, vacuum, clear hangers from the racks and other duties. The store relies heavily on volunteers, and you’ll see senior volunteers as well as high school students there. It is a welcoming and wonderful place to visit.
With Regina’s involvement as a volunteer she was recently invited to and attended their annual Benefit Dinner and Auction Gala. It was a very fancy event at the Georgia International Convention Center.
We’re hoping to partner further to enhance the lives of all involved. Our next venture is for a small group of people with EnAble to visit the Hope House and use their new sensory room. It is currently being set up, and it will be a great service to EnAble to have this available for those we serve to use.
Karen Stephens, Director of Volunteer Services at Southwest Christian Care has been the driving force behind this venture, along with support from others along the way. And also a big thank you to Georgia Lungaro, Store Manager at Born Again Bargains.
If you want to visit the store, it is located downtown Fairburn at 17B Hudson Plaza. There will soon be a store in Fayetteville as well. w

Welcome to Diane Rosenstein!
Everyone at EnAble would like to extend a warm welcome to Diane Rosenstein. This October, Diane moved to Denna Drive Group Home in Alpharetta from Lilburn in order to live closer to her sister Margery.
A native of Atlanta, Diane is one of three daughters born to Michael and Rita Rosenstein. Diane is very close to her sisters, and they visit with each other often. Diane is very outspoken and lots of fun! Puzzles, paper dolls and movies are among her favorite hobbies. Diane enjoys arts, crafts and singing as well. One of her favorite songs to sing is the National Anthem!
Diane has made fast friends with the ladies at Denna Drive. If as they say, "laughter is the best medicine," there won’t be a stuffy nose to be found at Denna Drive this winter; as this group of ladies seems to be overcome with the giggles daily!
Diane is quickly becoming a member of the community here in Alpharetta. She has joined the Gesher L’Torah synagogue and looks forward to being part of their 50s+ social group. Diane and her friends at Denna enjoy going for beauty days at the local salon as well. Welcome Diane! w

Spotlight on Grimes Place
The men living at Grimes
Place, Evan, Kenneth, John and Matthew, are enjoying living a carefree life in
their friendly community. Each individual has his own unique lifestyle, yet they
blend perfectly together.
The guys have also designated Tuesday as their Movie Night.
On Tuesdays, the crew goes to the “Picture Show” located on the 120 Loop and
then out to dinner. John, Evan, Matthew, and Kenneth enjoy being supported by a
dedicated group of people at their home – Shanita Farlow, Duncan Ngari, Femi
Obanor, Gbenga Erinoso, Segun Afolabi, Claretha Sheppard, Christopher Kamami and
George Esuke. John and Kenny in the back during dinner discussions, as he Evan and Matthew in the front shares his many experiences
through the use of gestures and sign language.
Most recently, Evan sharpened his skills in using the push pads to open
automatic doors at area businesses, and enjoys going to the North Point Mall to
practice.
John, more affectionately referred to as “Mr. Roswell,” has
decided to pursue a new career path and is now employed by Walgreens. To
practice his human relations skills, he is presently assisting Rob Shilt at
EnAble
with interviewing candidates for support service positions. John has many
friends and associates outside of EnAble. Whenever the guys are out in their
community, John is guaranteed to run into one of his many friends. At the end of
July, John joined his family on a cruise to Alaska. Just ask him to tell you
about it! |
Look at Me
A poem written by the ladies of Denna Drive Group Home
Jackie Brantley, Becky Williams, and Debbie Bentley are three of the four ladies served at Denna Drive. Not pictured is Sharon Swift.
Look at me. I’m a reflection of God’s love.
All the goodness, love and hope are in my veins.
Look at me. Society says I’m different, but God says I’m special.
Look at me. My legs don’t quite work right. My speech is a little blurred. I can’t take care of all my personal needs.
Look at me. Instead of making fun of me try to help me. Try actually being me.
Look at me because I am love.

Memorial Day Weekend Remembered
By Matthew McWhorter, in his own words:
When my parents
and I arrived at my brother’s house, my brother and his family were not there.
They were at the
Nancy and Matthew McWhorter
This was my first time seeing my new niece, Emma, and I was happy to see her. Emma was asleep in her car seat when they got home. The first thing I did was hold her in my arms, and while she was in my arms, she looked up at me. We walked to my brother’s office and my mom showed me a pink ribbon on a sign that symbolized the birth of my niece. On the way back, we stopped at the store to get things to make tacos for dinner. While we were sitting down for dinner, we talked about how good the tacos were. On Sunday morning, my mom, brother, his wife Maggie and I all went for a walk. As we were walking, we heard church bells ringing.
We walked back to the house to get ready to pack the car to go back to Georgia. It was hard saying good-bye to my brother and sister-in-law, so when we returned to Georgia, we called them to let them know we made it back to Georgia. When we got to my parents’ house, we unpacked the car and had some lunch before I went back to Grimes Place and had dinner. w

How To Grow Tomatoes
Marshall Port, in his own words:
I started with a packet of seeds and put the seeds in pots with dirt and water. I had a lot of pots! One day the sprouts came up. I gave them lots of love so they grew big. Then I bought some good soil and dug holes in the yard. I give them lots of water every day and now I have lots of tomatoes.
They’re starting to grow big and turn red so we can eat them! w

EnAble's 12th Annual Golf Classic
We
had a good time at the tournament! My group was at Hole 11 most of the day. There was a new Lexus there to
win, for anyone who got a hole-in-one. It had a lease for two years. But no one
got a hole-in-one, although one of the players almost got a hole-in-one. It was
a nice car! I would have liked to ride around the golf course in it! |
